Software recommendations
Below is a list of software I regularly use,
and which I can highly recommend to any computer-interested person.
All the software referred to is free!
The most popular implementation of Unix operating system ever! Linux
is freely available for several hardware platforms (Intel PC, Sun,
Alpha, soon Mac). Comes with a wealth of softare, already compiled,
ready to go! I can especially recommend either the Red Hat or the Debian distributions of Linux.
A powerful programming language. Provides a high-level interpretive
environment excellent for scripting, experimentation and hacking!
Very easy to learn, a real productivity tool. It is similar to, but
in many ways better than Perl or Matlab. Python is available under all
Unixes, Windows and Mac. There exist Python interfaces for Tk, Win32,
and OpenGL.
GNU software
Almost all GNU software is excellent! It always comes with complete
sources, is portable to many Unix platforms (and sometimes to Windows
as well). It is usually very well-maintained. The main ftp site for
GNU software is ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/
and there are many mirror sites.
Some high level overviews of GNU software are available.
The GNU
software index describes the GNU project and its software. It is
more complete than the official GNU page.
Trent's GNU page has
some other information.
