Subject: Libellous Statement

Dear Mr. Campbell,

In the letter below you have blatantly misrepresented the truth, in an
obvious attempt
to harm the reputation of MEGAWEB Business Services. Since you apparently
don't have the time or resources to look things up or research them in any
way, I am providing you with the following definition:

LIBEL--1. a written or published statement that is likely to harm the
reputation of the person or persons about whom it is made; false or damaging
statement 2. to write or publish such a statement about 3. act or CRIME of
writing or publishing such a statement.

We are asking sir, that you immediately write a retraction to each of the
persons who you copied with your erroneous statements and clear our name.
Just in case you still have not bothered to research the subject, allow me
to enlighten you.

(1) MEGAWEB is in no way associated with any enterprise known as MODEMLINK.
(2) You originally contacted me inquiring about our services. After two or
three very
rude letters from you, I responded to you and told you that it was
probably in both
yours and MEGAWEB's best interest that you find someone else to do
business with. Unfortunately for both of us, the next person you
contacted was another one of our sales representatives. He
unknowingly accepted your order. You were, of course,
unsatisfied with our service from day one. We honored our
guarantee by rerunning your ad several times. You were again, to
nobody's surprise, still not satisfied with our service. We then
promptly issued you a full refund, with our apologies and best
wishes.

(3) You have my E-Mail address (which is incidentally an AOL address) and
could have written me with any request you have had in regards to
removing your name from our mailing list. This is the first I have
heard of any such request.

Your letter has been forwarded to our coorporate attorneys who are fully
prepared to take legal action against you if this retraction has not been
mailed to everyone you copied with these statements by Monday, November 27,
1995.

Sincerly,

Carmen E. Ketcham

Please take my name off your mailing lists. I am sorry to inform you
that the "MODEMLINK" service appears to be a lie. How do I know?
First of all, because I received *two* copies, so their mailing lists
are falsely inflated by at least one. Bu much worse, because the
service also calls itself "MEGAWEB" and "MEGAWWW" and "MEGAWW," and I
have received advertising from MEGAWWW in the past and politely
requested to be removed from the list, back when MEGAWWW was operating
from AOL.

When it became clear that I was not removed from the list, I reported
this fact to the AOL postmaster (cc'd to MEGAWWW), and eventually AOL
replied to tell me that the accounts of MEGAWWW and MEGAWW were
"terminated from America Online for egregious abuse of the Internet."

Now we see the same bogus "service" appearing under the name
MODEMLINK@INTERRAMP.COM and accepting replies at MODLINKMKT@AOL.COM.

Dear Mr. Ketcham:

When I have a little more time I will be writing a longer reply to
your message (enclosed below), which will include all relevant prior
correspondence and more of the rude insults you so richly deserve.
But for now the short answers are:

(1) I will not retract. I stand by my right to express my opinion of
your little scam, and to describe my experience with it. You clearly
do not know the differences between a dictionary and the US Legal
code, but if you should obtain a clue, check out U.S.C.S. Title 18
Sec. 2707 (1979). Go ahead, sick your lawyers on me, I'm calling
   your bluff!

(2) Your statements about past interaction between me and MEGAWEB are
just plain wrong. I never contacted you about your "service;"
rather I was spammed by MEGAWEB's "service" with unsolicited
email advertisements and have been trying ever since to obtain
acknowledgment that you have removed me from your mailing list.
I keep a record of all the spam I receive and neither your name
nor your email address nor anything close appears anywhere in that
file. I am a graduate student at MIT and spend all my work hours
on research. I don't have any business to advertise. I challenge
you to provide corroboration of your claim that I ever requested
   your "service."

(3) The main reason I associate MEGAWEB and MODEMLINK is that MEGAWEB's
name appears at the bottom of MODEMLINK's spam, and they have identical
errors in their mailing lists, and identical disclaimers. It kinda
looks like someone was changing MEGAWEB's name to MODEMLINK and they
forgot to change 2 entries! the following is cut from MODEMLINK's spam
(the whole spam was included in my original message). Please note the
"invitation" to join MODEMLINK, followed by the CO-OP MEGAWEB OFFER NO
1 and CO-OP MEGAWEB OFFER NO. 2, followed by a guarentee used by both,
followed by MODEMLINK's email address. Sure smells fishy to me!!

Howdy. this is the 2nd time I've gotten the AIDS email and probably
not the last. Although it is a visceral demonstration, I think there
are two things wrong with the experiment:

(1) There should be a time limit. Otherwise, it'll keep bouncing
around the net for years like the false story about a $250
cookie recipe; the fake alert for the "good times" virus, and
the Japanese petition against nuclear tests (those poor folks
are now *begging* to stop receiving copies of their petition).

(2) It's a poor model of intimate contact. None of us consented to
anything before receiving the email, as one would consent to sex
before contracting AIDS. It went instantly to 18 people spread
across the country. The first time I got it, it came across a
mailing list to about 1000 people at once. I sure can't think
of a sexual practice that operates like that!

The reason I'm writing at length about this is because the "pass it
to all your friends through email" technique is becoming a popular
marketing tool in addition to its use in hoaxes and sincere messages
(I am guilty of forwarding the "Polar Express" marketing email). We
on the net are ripe for manipulation and we should become aware of it.

So now when I get a "forward to all your friends" email, I run it
through a checklist: Does it smell like a hoax? Is it a marketing
ploy? Does it have no way of terminating?

Anyway, thanks for attending to all my ranting and raving; take care,

								- Lee

Why your small business needs to get on the Internet
    by: David Schmetterer
     Tigre78@aol.com
     tigre78@j51.com

Ok, let's get something clear right from the get-go. We have all
heard the hype about getting your business on the Internet. You will
reach millions of people with one little post in the right spot.
People will come flocking to your Web site in droves, the server it
is on will go down from the heavy load, and your email box will be
filled to it's limit. Who knows, this happens so abruptly maybe the
postmaster from your domain will freak out and try to figure who who
is mailbombing you. I mean, your on THE NET, right? Your business is
into the 23rd century right? Wrong.

Don't Believe the hype. But know this. Hype stems from fact, and it
is a fact that you can improve business with just one little post in
the right place. The thing is, the Internet is a complex place and to
find or create that place is an arduous task to say the least.

There are a few things you can do to improve business using the
Internet. The first being email, which you all have. Your email
connection is the prime way someone will get in touch with you over
the Internet. Another is this E-Magazine. If you scroll down a bit you
will see advertisements for businesses (do I need to draw a map?)
Well, you might say, "that costs money". Well everyone, there is
rarely a free lunch, but you can make lunch a more affordable venture
if that is what you are looking for.

With your Internet connection, provided it is a cost effective one
and usable at the same time, really does wire you in to millions of
people. Newsgroups, Web sites, IRC rooms, these are all places to
advertise your business. A post onto USENET newsgroup is free, just
make sure you don't "spam" and anger the regular readers of that
group. Use discretion in USENET or you might find your mailbox
filled with a real mail bomb, rather than a lot of mail. Keep your
posts short and sweet. Bulletin Boards are another great place to
advertise for free. Most online services have bulletin boards
associated with business, if not your business in particular. Look
around your online service, you wont break anything. Internet Relay
Chat (IRC)is a complex thing to get hooked up to for some people,
but once in you may find a room pertaining to your business. Of
course you should treat this with discretion, Don't just waltz in and
start spamming about your business every 15 minutes, you will get
kicked out. It is simply a place to meet people interested in the
same things as your business, which will usually result in sales.

Web sites are probably the hottest things to have if you want to
advertise (or webvertise) on the net, but you need special tools and
code just to get a simple post up. Graphics and links and even
(gulp) CGI scripts just make it all the more confusing to run.
Remember KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid and you will save yourselves a
lot of headaches. Now, if you are saying, "I am running my own
business, how am I supposed to have time for all of this, my time is
money ya' know", then you can find someone else to do it all for you.
There are many consulting firms who make either very complex web
pages for a large price, or simpler pages for, you guessed it, a
lower price. Some also offer their services in the form of
advertising the web page (if you don't tell people about it, no one
will ever find it), posting in USENET groups and on bulletin boards.
Remember, it is all about reaching people. If you have something
they want, and you make it so they can find you, they will. And
remember, it pays to advertise. You can reach me for FREE advice at
tigre78@j51.com or Tigre78@aol.com, thanks, and happy netting.

Craig Shergold message

               UPDATE ON CRAIG SHERGOLD

PHOENIX, AZ - - An unauthorized chain letter encouraging people to send
business cards to a seriously ill boy continues to generate thousands of
pieces of mail each day, even though the boy is now healed and the family
has requested an end to the mail.

News reports stated in 1989 that Craig Shergold, a 9-year-old English
boy diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, wanted to be recorded in the
Guinness Book of World Records for receiving the most greeting cards.
His wish was fulfilled in 1990 after receiving 16 million cards.

Shergold's tumor was successfully removed in March 1991. However, the
cards and letters continue. Several versions of the letter exist, most
of which wrongly claim that the young boy remains terminally ill and now
wants to receive the largest number of business cards. The addressee is
encouraged to gather business cards, forward them to an incorrect address
in Georgia and then forward the chain letter to 10 friends.

"The chain letter claims that Make-A-Wish is involved," stated James
E. Gordon, Chairman of the Board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of
America. "That is not true. Our organization is not, and has never been
associated with the letter. Yet our office continues to receive numerous
phone calls each month about the letter, diverting our staff time and
resources from our mission. The Make-A-Wish Foundation requests that
people please stop sending business cards or greeting cards to Craig
Shergold."

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of America has set up a special 800 number to
explain the situation. Callers can listen to a pre-recorded message by
dialing (800) 215-1333, ext. 184.

Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, based in Phoenix, has 80 chapters in
the United States. Any child between the ages of two-and-a-half and 18
who has been determined to have a life-threatening illness is eligible to
receive a wish. The first wish was granted in Phoenix in 1980, and since
then Make-A-Wish has granted more than 30,000 wishes ranging from building
a back yard fishing pond to an all-expense paid trip to Disney World.

For further information regarding the Make-A-Wish Foundation and qualifying
children, contact (800) 722-9474.

Subject: Your client ibb.com is not complying with RFC821
X=800-no:  uunet 800-900-0241
Status: U

Postmaster at UUnet: I am sorry to bother you with this, but there is a
rogue site to which you are providing connectivity, and they are forging
email headers. I received the annoying unsolicited advertising email
quoted below, so I called the 800 number included in the message and a
person there confirmed that the message had originated at ibb.com, but
refused to give his name or to connect me with any person who would
discuss non-compliance with RFC821. Thus I am writing to you at UUnet
because you provide connectivity to ibb.com and may have some leverage
in bringing them into compliance.

The problem with the message is that the "Received:" lines in the header
contain forged IP hostnames which hide the originating site of the
message.

Forgeries in the mail headers means that this site, ibb.com is not
complying with RFC 821. Here is the relevant section from page 21 of
RFC 821:

When the receiver-SMTP accepts a message either for relaying
or for final delivery it inserts at the beginning of the
mail data a time stamp line. The time stamp line indicates
the identity of the host that sent the message, and the
identity of the host that received the message (and is
inserting this time stamp), and the date and time the
message was received. Relayed messages will have multiple
    time stamp lines.

Clearly the identity of the host that sent the message has been forged;
"help-wanted.can-you-help-us.com" cannot be found in any router tables
or NIC databases. Please bring ibb.com into compliance, or else please
stop transporting their non-compliant mail. Thank you,

I have been spammed repeatedly by this jerk chag@moneyworld.com. I
followed his instructions and replied with "remove" repeatedly, and I
still get his spam!! (two examples of spam below; five days apart).

posmtaster@bbnplanet: I know you guys get too many complaints like
mine, but the guy gets his connectivity through bbnplanet and he is
abusing the net. He appears to own his whole site, so you are the
only responsible adult on the path. I appeal to you: make him stop
his spamming, or cut him off! Thank you,

Lee:

This was not icw.com or resumexpress.com that did this. A client of
resumexpress.com took it on himself to hire a third party to go out and put
up some ads (without spamming, he was told). Something went horribly wrong
with it and they were putting out multiple messages of the thing that
should not have happened in the first place. The people have been warned
about this not happening again. The client now knows better. Thanks for
pointing this out to us.

The recent spam from careernetonline.com advertising ResumeXPRESS
appears to originate from an outfit calling itself MSI Marketing.

The NY Times article (Sept 5, sect D page 1) lists 5 domains that AOL
blocked: netfree.com, honeys.com, cyberpromo.com, answerme.com and
servint.com.  The last three are all associated with Cyber Promotions;
servint being the provider. The article describes how cyberpromo is
trying to sue AOL to stop their block!

I've been spammed by cyberpromo and not known who to complain to, but
now I know: traceroute shows cais.com (Capital Area Internet Service)
appears to have a host on mae-east, and they provide for servint:

Hello,

This week, briefly on Sunday and then full scale on Monday, we
experience the attack of a mail forger who used our site as a
distribution point for mass mailings. The forger had access to
multiple other networks and switched from one to another as we
were blocking him. We have not seen a new spate of attacks
since 10 pm Monday and believe we have stopped the activity through
us.

However, as this is not one of our users the attack may occur again
through some other agency. In fact, it was reported to us that this
mailing had already been done before through another system. We
will be contacting the originating sites and encouraging them to
track down the individual responsible.

For those of you who have mail blocking software, these are the
bogus 'From' addresses which were used in the mailings:

	securer4u@secur.yet
	secureru@secure.yes
	security4u@netsafe.yet
	security4u@netsecure.yet
	securityadmn@netsecure.yet
	securityadmn@netsecurity.yes

We appreciate your concerns, and would like to especially thank
you for the quick and courteous notifications which included full
full mail header information so that we could investigate this matter.
