Acadia National Park

General Information about Acadia

Acadia National Park is in Maine, off the Northern coast. The park has rocky beaches and mountains (well, New England mountains, anyway), and great places to hike. A great asset of the park is its system of carriage roads. Apparently one of the Rockefellers used to live on the island at the turn of the century. He had something against cars, so as they were growing in popularity, he decided to show everyone you could still use horse drawn carriages by building an elaborate grid of carriage roads. They crisscross the park and let you bike ride into areas that would otherwise take hours to hike to.

These pictures are from a visit to Acadia made with my friends, Geoff Ziebold and Kevin Levey.

Bubbles

[24299 bytes 512x228] . [64500 bytes 1024x456]
The hills in the distance are called, "The Bubbles." Don't ask me why.

Eagle Lake

[34822 bytes 512x228] . [94630 bytes 1024x456]
This is a picture of Eagle Lake from one of the carriage roads.

Bridge and Geoff

[53013 bytes 512x230] . [148825 bytes 1024x460]
Along with the system of roads, Rockefeller had several bridges built, many of which still stand.

Mansion

[36422 bytes 511x216] . [94548 bytes 1022x433]
The park lies on Mt. Desert Island but does not occupy the whole island. There are a few residential areas, and some beautiful houses. I wouldn't mind shacking up in this one.

Sandy Beach

[24809 bytes 512x221] . [63239 bytes 1024x442]
This picture is of Sandy Beach. Encircling the park is the Park Loop Road, and Sandy Beach lies off that road.

Sunset #1

[16694 bytes 512x230] . [41507 bytes 1024x460]
Geoff, Kevin, and watched the sunset one night from Cadillac Mountain. It was a great sunset with low clouds and rich, red colors, and the mountains gives a nice panoramic view.

Sunset #2

[11924 bytes 512x213] . [28585 bytes 1024x427]
Here is another view of the sunset as the sky yellowed.

Sunset #3

[13501 bytes 512x213] . [33590 bytes 1024x426]
And now here it is as it softened and reddened. Nature rules, doesn't it?

Geoff watching sunset

[16880 bytes 511x230] . [42023 bytes 1023x461]
Geoff soaks in the sunset.
