Yes, I bought a Newton. Yes, it went completely dead less than three years after it was manufactured. Yes, I was in France at the time and it took all my train, hotel, and contact information with it. Yes, Apple wants twice what I paid for it to fix it.
And finally, yes, I took it completely apart. I couldn't justify
sinking that much MORE money into a psudo-functional piece of Dole, so I turned the lifeless lump over to the curious,
two-year-old, take-everything-apart-and-see-how-it-works section of my
brain. Images as soon as I get the film developed and scan them in:
You're on your own. Good luck.
I'd love to find a palm-top 386/486. I'm not talking about one of those "Microsoft in ROM" overgrown calculators; how worthless can you get? And I'm not talking about a laptop either, laptops are too Gingriching big, yes even the 4.5 pounders. I'd love a 4x6", 4 oz package with 4MB RAM, 50MB HD, 20Mhz 386, 80x24 text display, a serial port, and a PCMCIA slot. Then I could run Linux and be happy. Do these exist? Seems unlikely. What would a businessman do with one? The Wearables project is pretty close, but I'm not yet convinced I want to wear one, and my wife is sure I don't.
Well now I have a bunch of Newton stuff that I don't need anymore. If you need something, drop me a note:
-
three-month-old PRETEC 2MB Flash EEPROM card ($100, obo) -
- MP100 AAA battery caddy
-
two-month-old rechargable MP100 battery pack
